Internal Linking SOP
A working playbook for the one job most sites do worst: connecting their own pages. Internal links tell Google and AI what your pages are about, which ones matter, and how they fit together. Get this right and the same content ranks higher and gets picked up more often in AI answers. This is our standing procedure, grounded in what Google publishes and what the field data shows. Share it with anyone.

An internal link is any link from one page on your site to another page on the same site. That sounds small. It is one of the few ranking levers you fully control, because you own every page on both ends. Google puts it plainly:
The vast majority of the new pages Google finds every day are through links, making links a crucial resource you need to consider to help your pages be discovered by Google.

In a 2024 study of the web, Ahrefs found 66.2% of pages have only one internal link pointing to them. Most sites are leaving discovery and authority unused. For a local service business, that is the difference between showing up when a homeowner searches at 9pm and staying invisible while the call goes to a competitor. Fixing internal links costs nothing but attention.

Every page you care about should have a link from at least one other page on your site.

SEO Link Best Practices for Google · developers.google.comTwo more things worth knowing so nobody wastes time on old myths:
This is the part most people get wrong. The anchor text is the clickable words in a link. Google's rule is simple: the words should describe the page you are linking to. When you link the phrase that names the destination, you tell Google and AI what that page is about before they even visit it. When you link "click here," you tell them nothing.

Zyppy studied 23 million internal links across 1,800 sites. The finding on descriptive anchors was strong enough that the researchers reran the data three times.
Pages with at least one descriptive exact match anchor saw about five times the traffic of pages without one.
Vary your anchors so the profile looks natural, not machine-stuffed. A workable split for a page's incoming links, drawn from current GEO field guidance (ZC Marketing, 2025):
About 65 percent descriptive topic anchors, 22 percent branded, 13 percent exact match keyword.
Anchor text is one lever. Here is the full set of internal linking practices we apply in 2026. Each one traces back to Google's guidance or field data.
Pick your money topics. For each, build one deep pillar page and several supporting pages that each cover a subtopic. The pillar links down to every supporting page. Every supporting page links back up to the pillar, using descriptive anchors. This bidirectional web tells Google and AI you have real depth on the topic, not one thin page. HubSpot introduced this model in 2016 and it is now the standard.
A central pillar page connects to six supporting cluster pages. Links run both ways.
Your homepage and top blog posts usually hold the most ranking strength. Add links from those pages straight to the pages that book jobs. If your best guide is buried three sections deep and never links to your booking page, you are hoarding authority where it earns nothing.
A page a homeowner can reach in three clicks from the homepage gets crawled more often and reads as more important. For AI crawlers the bar is tighter, keep key pages within two to three clicks. Flat beats deep. If a service page takes five clicks to reach, it is too far.
An orphan page has zero internal links pointing to it. Google may never crawl or index it. Run a crawl, find the orphans, and link to each one from a relevant page. Start with orphans that already show impressions in Search Console, those are ranking with one hand tied.
Links written into your sentences carry more weight than links stacked in a sidebar or footer. This matters more than ever for AI, which reads the anchor text only when it sits inside a passage it pulls. Write the link where a reader would naturally want it, at the first real mention of the topic.
Google can only follow a link that is an a element with an href. AI crawlers like GPTBot and PerplexityBot do not run JavaScript the way Googlebot does, so a JavaScript only menu can hide your whole site from them. Every important link must render as plain HTML.
The Zyppy study found pages with 40 to 44 internal links drew about four times the traffic of pages with zero to four links. The gain flattens and can reverse past roughly 45 to 50 links, mostly because those extra links tend to be boilerplate. More real, relevant links help. A wall of navigation links does not.
Pages with 40 to 44 internal links drew about four times the traffic of pages with 0 to 4 links.
Every time you publish, go back and link to the new page from two or three older, related pages. This stops new pages from being born as orphans and keeps discovery flowing. Make it a step in your publishing checklist, not an afterthought.
When a homeowner asks ChatGPT or Google's AI for a plumber, the AI does not read your whole site. It pulls short passages that answer the question and cites the sources it trusts. Internal links shape both which passages get found and whether the AI reads your site as an authority. Start here, because it settles the debate:
There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary. You can apply the same foundational SEO best practices for AI features as you do for Google Search overall.
Google Search Central, AI Features and Your Website, May 2026 · developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-featuresIn other words, good internal linking is not a separate AI trick. It is the same work paying off on a second surface. Here is how it carries over.
Google's own guidance in 2026 is that optimizing for AI search is still SEO. The sites that win the AI answer are the sites with clean structure, descriptive links, and real topic depth. That is exactly what this SOP builds.
This is the repeatable process. Run it on a new site once, then keep it current with a monthly pass.
Use Screaming Frog, Ahrefs Site Audit, or Semrush Site Audit. Export every page and its internal links. This is your starting picture. You cannot fix what you have not counted.
List the pages that book jobs: core service pages, top location pages, the booking or contact page. These are the pages that need the most internal links pointing at them.
Group pages into pillar and supporting sets. Decide which page is the pillar for each money topic and which pages support it. Note the links that are missing between them.
Pull the list of pages with zero internal links. Link to each from a relevant page. Fix pages already earning Search Console impressions first.
Add the missing links inside the body copy. Use the anchor rules from this SOP: descriptive, on topic, varied, no filler words. Link the first natural mention.
Repair or remove every broken internal link and clean up redirect chains. These waste crawl budget for Google and AI alike.
Check that key links render as plain HTML a href elements, not JavaScript only. Verify in Search Console's URL inspection that Google sees them.
Re-crawl monthly to catch new orphans and broken links. Add internal links to older pages every time you publish something new. This is maintenance, not a one time project.
Each of these is common, and each one leaks rankings or discovery. Scan the list against any site before you call it done.
| Mistake | What it costs | The fix |
|---|---|---|
| Click here anchors | Google and AI learn nothing about the destination. Up to 5x less traffic than descriptive anchors. | Link the phrase that names the target page. |
| Orphan pages | Pages never crawled or indexed. They cannot rank at all. | Link every page from at least one other page. |
| Deep pages | Five clicks deep reads as unimportant and gets crawled rarely. | Keep money pages within three clicks of home. |
| JavaScript only menus | AI crawlers cannot follow the links. Whole sections go undiscovered. | Render key links as plain HTML a href. |
| Broken internal links | Wasted crawl budget and dead ends for users and bots. | Run a monthly crawl and repair every 404. |
| Same exact anchor everywhere | Reads as spam and confuses topic ownership. | Vary anchors. Keep a descriptive majority. |
| All links in the footer | Weakest placement, and AI ignores them when pulling passages. | Put the important links inside the body copy. |
| Nofollow on internal links | Blocks your own authority from flowing. Pointless sculpting. | Keep internal links plain and followed. |
Internal linking is not a magic switch. It is a compounding asset. Here is the honest timeline so nobody sets the wrong expectation with a client.
New and orphaned pages get crawled and indexed. You see pages entering the index and impressions starting in Search Console. This is the first proof the plumbing is working.
Pages you pointed authority and descriptive anchors at start climbing. Rankings shift for the target phrases. This is where the money pages begin to move up.
Topic clusters mature, AI systems start citing your pages more, and the gains stack because the structure keeps working on every new page you publish.
Ninety days is a realistic window to judge real traction. Six months to see it settle. Anyone promising two weeks is counting vanity metrics. Internal linking works on top of good content, it does not replace it. The upside is that it is fully in your control, it costs no ad spend, and once the structure is right it keeps paying on every page you add.
For a local service business the chain is short. Better internal links mean more pages found and indexed. More pages ranking means more homeowners see you when they search on Google, Maps, or AI. More visibility at the moment of need means more calls, and more calls means more booked jobs. The link between a clean site structure and a busier phone is direct, even if it is quiet.
Every claim above traces to one of these. Google's own documentation is the primary authority. Third party studies are cited for field data. Two figures are marked directional where the primary study is not public.
